Apprenticeship
Joint Apprenticeship Program

Local 149 has always had Apprentices but it was not until December 16, 1954 that they became sanctioned with the Federal government and have remained that way until the present day.

The first known school location was in the basement of the old Champaign High School on Randolph and Hill street in Champaign. From there it moved to Champaign Central High School (currently Edison Middle School), and also the current Champaign High School on University Ave. The School District had some input on hours of class and who could attend even if the were not a member of the Local. This being the case the Local moved the school to a building at the corner of Glover and Oregon in Urbana and our own members took over the business affairs of the school. It wasn't until December of 1966 our present building was completed and the school moved in.

A large debt of gratitude must be given to the Journeymen who pioneered our past and shaped our future to where it is today, if it were not for their sacrifice and commitment to what they felt was just, we could not have achieved what we have today.

The Local 149 Apprentice & Journeyman program provides:
  1. A five-year education to a career that can last a lifetime, with the only cost being textbooks.
  2. On the job training or earn while you learn.
  3. Journeyperson training that provides Certifications in most areas of our trade and upgrade classes to keep them current.
